The Guild Shop of St. John the Divine was founded in September 1962 by a group of dedicated Episcopal women in the weekly sewing group who wanted to use their talents to serve the Lord, their church and the community. That mission is “To enrich the community as a Christian ministry and resale shop dedicated to awarding financial support to organizations that serve the elderly in need.” In the early days, the number one benefactor is St. James House. Since 1982, the retirement home has received over $5 million to help the Financial Assistance Fund. More recently, the opportunity has arisen to enrich more groups that do wonderful work with the elderly.

RUDE EMPLOYEES!! I asked to see a ring and an employee named CATHY handed it to me for 5 seconds before aggressively snatching it out of my hand. Apparently I look like a thief and can’t be trusted to admire a gold ring for more than 5 seconds. I really wanted to buy it but this interaction really put a damper on my first experience here. Won’t be back after feeling unwelcome.

The Guild shop is an innovative new experience in Gently used items and second time around. The store is so clean, smells good and so organized. The staff and volunteers are always available with a smile and ready to help. I have found last minute gifts as well as holiday and birthday gifts of good quality. They also have nice clean washrooms for customers.

I think this is one of my favorite thrift stores. I always seem to find at least one treasure to leave with. My favorites so far are a simple, yet lovely, painting of blackberries and the same exact trivet my mom had when I was growing up. The staff is friendly and the environment is clean–it is nothing like most thrift shops, where the air feels and smells dusty and stale. The prices seem very fair for a higher end thrift store.
