Social Profile :
St. Nicholas Orthodox church was founded at the request of the local Tlingit indian population in 1893, and our Native population remains the backbone of our parish. Today, St. Nicholas is home to all Orthodox Christians in Juneau and you will hear English, Tlingit, Slavonic, and even some Greek in services as we proclaim the Apostolic Gospel of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. During the Summer months, St Nicholas opens for tours and sells authentic Orthodox Gifts imported from Russia and Greece. Our unique, octagonal building was constructed with funds donated from Russia, and the six large panels in the front were painted in Russia, there weren’t any Russians in Juneau until after the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

Somewhat interesting but not really worth the walk up the hill. Church and store we’re both closed. Looks from the outside like it needs some love and care.

With the walk, go past all the ticky tacky gift shops, up the hill.

Exquisite, historic, living church. Stopped by one afternoon and the priest, himself, dropped what he was doing to show us around inside, letting us know detailed history (church is a gift of Tsar Alexander III, etc.) and connections to city, state and local culture. Beautiful treasure for Juneau.

Nice little church with unusual architecture. Worth having a look during a visit to Juneau. If you are lucy and can get a look inside, make sure you do it with some sensitivity to those who may members of the community there.

Eh, was much smaller than I thought it would be. If you are driving by, nothing spectacular. You won’t miss much if you don’t go. I am pretty sure you would get a lot more of you attended a service and talk to those who attend about the history of the church. I would say the neighborhood in general is interesting and worth driving up the hill.
