A family member passed recently and left us a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder with 95,000 miles on it. The deceased was obsessive in his care of the vehicle and had the receipts to prove it. Because of this, we knew that it was due for an oil change.I brought it into this dealership because I’ve always only ever brought any of my vehicles to the dealership for maintenance, believing that paying a bit more was worth being able to trust the quality of the parts and the word of the mechanic. This wasn’t the case at Nissan Serramonte.They did their “free” inspection and informed me that the vehicle needed over $4,000 worth of repairs. There were two problems with this assessment: 1) the work they said was “critical” absolutely is not—the items had recently been ok’d by another mechanic for several thousand more miles; and 2) the quoted prices were outrageous. For example, they wanted $200 just for the diagnostic, a procedure that normally costs $65 on the low end and $100 on the high end. Not to mention the fact that you can replace an entire engine for around $4,000 to $6,000.I was puzzled by their estimate to say the least, but it all made sense once I received an email from a Nissan salesperson telling me that there’s never been a better time to get a new Pathfinder.Side note: one of the remote locking mechanisms for the vehicle needs a new battery. They told me they don’t stock batteries for RKS’s. That’s the first time I’d ever heard that from a dealer.The vehicle is in great condition and it has sentimental value, so we’re not getting rid of it anytime soon, nor will we ever set foot in Nissan Serramonte again.
