An established landmark used bookstore with four floors stocked with impressive titles of all genres. Something for everyone. Friendly and courteous staff are always ready to assist.

I used to really like this spot but their handling of COVID precautions has made me feel uncomfortable. It doesn’t seem like the owners are taking the staff or customer’s safety seriously, which has made me not want to visit recently.I would love to change this rating back to 5 stars if the owners prioritize the health and safety of their employees, and respect the worker’s right to collectively provide input when changing workplace boundariesEdit: (response to owner’s comment) This response, and specifically the mention of increasing store capacity – in direct contradiction of employee’s requests – further emphasizes their lack of respect for worker’s right to input on such decisions. I’m sad to see what was once a community institution chose to follow the lead of Jeff Bezos and suppress the voices and needs of their workers in favor of personal profit.I don’t care in the slightest if I have to stand outside the door for 5-10 minutes if I know that the workers are being treated with dignity.Alternative organization such as East Bay Books, Marcus Books, and others have set a better example, and I would encourage those reading to consider supporting these stores instead.

A Berkeley staple. Varied collection, cozy layout and friendly staff. Had to return a book after seeing one that caught my eye and the process was smooth. Go there, get lost in the books and don’t be afraid to ask for help from the amazing staff!
