I felt like I was in great hands and a very cool environment.

I was on an 80 mile excursion from NYC to Croton when I had a flat in the Bronx. I was able to do a quick road repair that got me up and running, but since it was fairly early in my ride I wanted to replace the tube for peace of mind and check the tire pressure, and maybe even replace the spent CO2 cartridge even though I carry a small hand pump. I pulled out my iPhone and located this shop that was close by and not far off of my route, and even noted it had mostly good reviews, so I went there. I didn’t need much, but my experience, and the service that I received was almost comically bad.Outside there was a sign and a decrepit old heap of a bike chained to the sidewalk announcing my arrival. The store looked closed, but I tried the door and found that it opened to a flight of rusty steel stairs. At the top another set of doors opened to reveal something that looked more like a bicycle mortuary where someone might go to redeem their two wheeled conveyance for scrap than actually buy anything. It was all parts and old bikes in various states of disassembly. I stood there for a few seconds seemingly alone in this hoarder’s delight when a voice from nowhere suddenly piped up asking me what I wanted. A gruff old gentleman with a long beard practically down to his navel appeared from behind some junk. I explained my situation that I needed a tube, and, if possible, a CO2 replacement. He informed me that he had the correct size tube but not the cartridge, which I wasn’t too optimistic about anyway. Seeing a collection of pumps standing next to me, one or two of which looked like they might actually work, I asked if I could add air, whereupon he felt both of my tires and said you already have air. At most shops air is a common courtesy you don’t even need to ask about. I replied that I wanted to check the pressure and he shot back your pressure’s fine. ‘OK’ I thought, ‘I’m not going to get to use one of the pumps’. Then he went to a closet and retrieved a box with the correct tube and informed me that it would be $20. I looked at the box and read the description. It looked legit and unused, if not grossly overpriced. Not wanting to wander all over Westchester looking for a reasonably priced tube I went with it while nevertheless informing him that it was about 3 times more than I usually pay for tubes. He tried to explain that tubes are in short supply and that I should try to get them online. I could have responded that I already have a stack of them at home, but I kept my mouth shut as he ran my credit card. Then I took the tube and carried my bike back down the rusty stairs to the street where I could resume my ride. All of this leaves me perplexed. How does this store get good reviews? Is this really the best bike shop in the area, as one reviewer said? If it is then, Good Lord! someone needs to open a real one nearby. They’d make a mint! Maybe I got this person on a bad day or there are different people who work there and his doppelganger is really a nice guy. Maybe he didn’t like my looks when I walked in with bike shoes and attired in typical road kit with a somewhat serious looking bike. Perhaps he knew that I was never likely to come his way again. Still there’s something to be said for simple human decency. The only other time I’ve ever encountered such weirdly awful customer service at any kind of store, and it’s been a while, it turned out that it was not a real store at all, but a front for illicit activity. I doubt that’s the case here, but it does leave me scratching my head.

This place is a complete trash pile. Second floor, no AC. The scary beird man didn’t answer any of my questions, but did cover me with alcohol fumes. Avoid by all means.
