**Unprofessional, Low Quality, Expensive and Rude**The first thing you note when you reach the service counter at Abbey’s is the display of half- to third-full bottles of booze to your left, in the manager’s glass-walled office. The other thing one notes is that almost all the staff does not wear COVID-preventive masks.I went there to purchase high end double-grip pads cut to the size of my area rugs. I previously purchased several of these from the former owners — two sweet and knowledgeable older men who recently sold the business to another entity that spiffy-ed up the store. I had been happy with the purchase, so I returned. This time, the pads were not cut on the spot and I had to return two days after ordering the pads to pick them up. The pads were improperly packed – squished (rather than gently rolled) with a sticky parcel packing tape that prevented them from being flat on the floor. The cut marks had nubby margins, and the saleswoman apologized and suggested that perhaps the cutting knife was dull. The manager emerged from his booze office to yell at me that the job was done properly, and this wavy pads will eventually flatten. Because I am quite familiar with the manners in which these double-grip pads are to be cut, packed and handled, I politely disagreed. The saleswoman suggested that the staff steams the pads to straighten them, but the manager barked aggressively that nothing will be done to remedy the situation. Usually, if the pads are not cut properly (until this time I’ve never encountered improper packing) the store has to provide an alternative set of these pads. But this was not the case with Abbey. He angrily declared that if I don’t purchase the pads as-is, he won’t sell me anything and I ought to leave the store. I mumbled that I am not used to be treated so unprofessionally and rudely and left the store.Google maps offered me a wide selection of rug and carpet stores in San Francisco, so I crossed the bridge and went to one that specializes in high-end rugs. I ended up with a much higher quality double-grip rug pads — denser and thicker, and to my surprise, they cost 30% less than what I was to pay Abbey. The pads were properly cut on the spot, and lovingly wrapped and tied with a thin rope. I was treated with all courtesy and kindness. It is unfortunate that I had to experience the rudeness and unprofessionalism of Abbey’s store. Nevertheless, I’m lucky that I didn’t succumb to the store manager bullying and purchased the pads there.PS-Masks are no longer mandatory, yet out of courtesy and worry about the COVID mutations uncovered by the vaccine, almost all SF-Bay-Area folk continue to wear them in stores, and other roofed public spaces.
