Pogonip was good enough, but not amazing. Very nice options for trails, some shady trails, some open space trails, some great views, spotted a deer, and some good exercise, but no trail gets a five star from me unless there is something spectacular to see, like a waterfall – and the Lost Boys House is cool, but not spectacular. Besides, when we left, I found a tick crawling on my neck under my ear lobe and then turned around to find 2 more on my dog. We’ve been on lots of trails around here, and that’s by FAR the most ticks I’ve found. Yuck.

Finally walked one of the trails, it is a beautiful 11 mile area close to the heart of Santa Cruz. The trail we walked was mainly uphill but there are others that are less strenuous. Has mountain bike and horse trails too. The Koi pond is lovely, surrounded by Redwoods in a peaceful setting.

I didn’t see any homeless encampments when my son and I visited. We did see some bike parts though. Overall, it’s a decent hike for beginners or intermediate hikers. We saw many of the creatures listed on their posts which is always a plus for us. There is this old lodge there that is dilapidated that someone should do something about. If it’s historical in some significant way then it would be nice if they would refurbish it, if not, tear the mother down already.
