Review Summary

We went to this memorabilia store in Monterey. From an outsiders perspective this is actually a cool-looking store. Word of advice… Keep looking, DON’T BUY. And if you read nothing past this point, make sure to read the reviews posted by other consumers at their other locations BEFORE BUYING. I promise they’ll be eye opening. My husband and I bought a signed Goodfellas display from this store. We were skeptical of it’s authenticity, but were assured by all three employees that it was forensically authenticated by a 3rd-party. When we got home we went to the website on the COA (certificate of authenticity) card to check the authenticity. The only place to check to see if our item was real was on THEIR website, not a 3rd-party as they had said. We thought that was strange, but continued to type in the COA #. We got the message Not Found, and called the store to find out why our item had not previously been verified, and why our COA didn’t work. The employee, Doug, was incredibly rude, and hung up on me without explaining anything. We immediately returned to the store the return the display. The general manager of the store called my husband while we were returning the item. He remained on the phone for an hour, trying to justify why his items were not fake. Red flag- if you really believe in your items and stand behind them, why do you feel the need to stay on the phone with us for an hour at 10pm on a Friday night to convince us? Unfortunately for him and his company, he FAILED. For one, a store selling authentic goods would have their items authenticated BEFORE selling them. It shouldn’t take four days after I’ve bought the item for you to tell me it’s real (or in this case, not). Second, although all of the employees assured us the item had been verified by an outside source called AOC, the owner later told us that not ALL items are verified by a 3rd party. THEY verify their own items, which only means they stand behind their items. Oh, and RED FLAG, the 3rd-party who verified the item, called AOC, is actually THEIR store- Antiquities of California. The owner told us that we wouldn’t be in major cities if we weren’t reputable. WRONG. All of these stores are located in major tourist areas. Tourists tend to buy on impulse, and leave town before ever verifying whether the item they bought is real.Where the general REALLY dug his own grave was when he told us during our phone conversation that, If I buy 100 of the same items I will only get 1 authenticated… Otherwise it’s too expensive. As a consumer, I want to know that MY ITEM has been verified as real, not that one one the 100 you bought was real. That says NOTHING about the piece you are selling me.I will leave one last quote from the general manager of the store… You can only know for sure that something is authenticated if you see it. This is absolutely correct in terms of this store. If you didn’t see it get signed, don’t trust their word that it was.
