Review Summary

Jillian Guthman is a bottomless source of information not only about your taxes, how to grieve, enhanced STAR benefits, common voter and tax frauds. Efficient, friendly, problem solver.

I had a miserable experience with Ms. Guthman, and I am dissatisfied enough to write to the town Supervisor. I found it suspicious looking at my check record that I had not written down my tax payment, although I thought I had written the check, and mailed it in on December 21st. As I was troubled by this I tried calling the Receiver of Taxes’ office on January 8th and 9th multiple times but the phone just rang and rang — no one picked up. On January 10th, the due date without penalty I called again and was answered by an extremely brusque woman who said, We haven’t even gotten to December yet, but your name sounds familiar and I will call you. I said, Please, I don’t want to be penalized if I made an error.A few days later I received my an envelope from the Receiver’s office containing my original envelope and a Christmas gift check to my niece! Naturally I was extremely upset to see that I had made such an error under the pressures of the Holiday, so on Tuesday, January 16, I went to Town Hall with my check book, and Ms. Guthman said I sympathize with your situation, but there’s nothing I can do — the rules are the rules, and so I had to pay a 1% penalty of approximately $100.00. I said I could have driven over here on the 10th, if the individual I spoke with had told me to do so.I think it’s inexcusable that I couldn’t get anyone in that office to answer the phone for two days running, and equally unfair that an honest mistake should have cost me one hundred dollars. I also told Ms. Guthman that I had radical spinal surgery this year, and that just standing in her office for about an hour was very difficult for me.I am disgusted and angry, especially as I have never been late with my tax payment in nearly forty years of living in this town.
