They reward you with a pin and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Loved this store! Since it opened just recently, there’s a long wait to get in (we scanned the code at 10 am and got in the store at 5 pm), but it was worth the wait, and you don’t have to wait at the store while on the virtual line. The store is now mostly packed with tourists and Harry Potter fans, but if you live in the city I recommend going later this summer. I loved the selection of items sold and enjoyed playing the puzzle at the store, which is a game where you use your Harry Potter app to scan codes and figure out the secret key word, which you tell to a cashier so they can give you a cool pin. The Butterbeer cafe was also great, and you get to keep the cup. Will definitely be coming back.

The short answer is, if you’re even remotely a fan of the books (or movies) you should go as soon as possible. We haven’t had anything like this in NYC in two decades. With two levels (as of this writing), there are so many different things that fans are going to want to buy. I had to limit myself but keep thinking back to all I saw there and want to go back for me. Read more for my critiques. As a true fan, I was in line the day of opening and there are still a lot of kinks that the store needs to work out. The QR code for the line is easily able to be scanned by friends who aren’t in the line if you’re sneaky and take a photo of it. I really think that this is what made my 42 minute wait bounce up and down on day one.On day two they had it way more figured out and it seems like there may have even been standby options for folks. I will most definitely return over and over again even though I didn’t like my first day experience.

Great experience, totally worth the wait. My suggestion for those wanting to get in, come early! I arrived at 9am to scan the code and got in the store by 2:30. There’s plenty of shops and places to eat in the area to visit while waiting. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
