A lovely historic landmark that was cared for by Frank Schubert, the last civilian lighthouse keeper employed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Access to the lighthouse is limited to the Coast Guard and their guests.The lighthouse was added to Coney Island Point on September 5th 1891. Mister Schubert is credited with saving at least 15 lives during his four decades as the keeper of the light and fog bell.Today the lighthouse operations are automated. Frank Schubert passed away in his sleep on December 11th 2003. Like the lighthouse he remains a Brooklyn icon.
