Look, I’m sure they have reasons for not tearing this building down. But so many stores have moved out of it or closed, that all that’s left it the DMV, so what’s the point?
The Caldor Rainbow
An aged three-level indoor mall which opened in the mid-70s as the first indoor mall in the city apart of an urban renewal effort, which now mostly caters to small offices, independent shops and restaurants. The mall is one of several downtown malls within a several block radius.The mall doesn’t feature any traditional anchors other than a McDonald’s Town House, a rare variation of the chain’s non-drive thru urban-based locations, which has remained in the mall since its opening.The long-struggling downtown mall casts a blight on the city’s stark contrast of more successful shopping options, enough for its fate to hang in the balance with proposals to do away with the time-warped eyesore has been underway for several years.The mall is plenty distressed and even has some relics and oddities throughout. Unlike other malls in the area, the dilapidated aura attracts panhandlers outside McDonald’s and the homeless, one of which was sleeping on a staircase inside the mall upon our visit.
