Claire and her staff are always a delight to talk with and have answers to every possible question you could think of related to their bears and a lot of other bear species as well. Call ahead to find out the best time to go see the bears when they’re most active. The new viewing facility is beautiful and will give you an up close view on the side where the cubs are housed.

Claire gave us our personalized tour of the Fortress of the Bear. She was very knowledgeable and answered our many questions. She shared with us the story of this center and the resident bears. We witnessed the bears use sign language to communicate (they learn this so the care givers can provide health checks while the bears remain in their enclosures). The new building was first class and the enclosures the bears reside in appeared to have been created to provide the best experience for the bears, their care and for the visitors. There is nothing else I’ve ever seen like this – it’s no zoo. It’s an immersion into these bears lives!!!! Thanks to the team for doing this amazing work!!!

I visited Fortress of the Bear a few years ago! It provides a safe haven for bears, and I was able to view and photograph bears in a comfortable, serene environment! I highly recommend visiting Fortress of the Bear when in Sitka, Alaska!
